Basically a hangover is characterized by the sum of unpleasant physical and mental symptoms following heavy alcohol drinking.

Hangover begins within several hours after the cessation of drinking, when a person’s blood alcohol concentration is falling.

Alcohol promotes hangover symptoms through its effects on urine production, the gastrointestinal tract, blood sugar concentrations, sleep patterns, and biological rhythms.

Effects related to alcohol withdrawal, alcohol metabolism, congeners (compounds found in certain types of alcohol and created during the fermentation process), the use of other drugs, and a family history of alcoholism also may contribute to the hangover condition.

Although folk hangovers remedies abound, their efficiency in reducing the intensity and duration of a hangover has not received systematic study.

There is no known proven remedy for preventing or treating alcohol hangover.

From my own experience I can say that the only reliable cure for a hangover is time and in some extreme cases a doctor.

The hangover won't stop until the alcohol is out of your system.

However some cures will mitigate a large proportion of hangover symptoms.

It is worth to note that majority of hangover remedies can help only for relatively moderate and casual drinkers.
